Effects of Solid Retention Time (SRT) on Sludge Characteristics in Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) Reactor

چکیده
This study investigated the effects of solid retention time (SRT) on sludge characteristics and operational performance in enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) reactor. The results showed that the reactor operated at SRT of / = 8.3 d could achieve phosphate removal efficiency > 90 % and SVI < 100 mL g–1. In comparison, increasing SRT to / = 16.6 d led to a decrease of phosphate removal ( < 85 %) and an increase of SVI value (160 mL g–1), implying a performance degradation and worse settleability of the sludge. In both cases, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was observed stable in terms of overall efficiency of = 90 %. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) profiles of sludge revealed a good phylogenetic relationship of sludge with different SRTs. However, the predominant population of community appeared to vary. Especially, the appearance of filamentous microorganisms at longer SRT may be responsible for worse performance and sludge settleability of EBPR system.

Comparison of polyhydroxyalkanoates production by activated sludges from anaerobic and oxic zones of an enhanced biological phosphorus removal system: effect of sludge retention time.
This study compared the PHAs production behavior of sludges from the anaerobic and oxic phases of an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) system. This was accomplished by using the kinetics and stoichiometric coefficients obtained from aerobic batch tests to evaluate the performance of these two sludges. Experimental results indicated that the metabolic behavior of the sludges for PHAs...
متن کاملThe Effects of Operational Conditions on Ebpr Performance
Excessive nitrogen and phosphorus can cause eutrophication in water bodies and needs to be reduced in most wastewaters before discharge to receiving waters. The excess biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process has been shown to be an economical and environmentally compatible method of reducing phosphorus from wastewaters. Despite the complexity of EBPR mechanisms, appropriately designed and ...

This study investigated the abundance and distribution of key functional microbial populations and their activities in a full-scale integrated fixed film activated sludge-enhanced biological phosphorus removal (IFAS-EBPR) process. Polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) including Accumulibacter and EBPR activities were predominately associated with the mixed liquor (>90%) whereas nitrifying...

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) seeded with flocculated sludge and fed with synthetic wastewater was operated for an enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) process. Eight weeks after reactor startup, sludge granules were observed. The granules had a diameter of 0.5 to 3.0 mm and were brownish in color and spherical or ellipsoidal in shape. No significant change was observed in sludge gr...

A University of Cape Town (UCT) pilot plant combining both membrane bioreactor (MBR) and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) technology was monitored. Three experimental Phases were carried out by varying the mixed liquor sludge retention time (SRT) (indefinite, 30 and 15 days, respectively). The system performance has been investigated during experiments in terms of: organic carbon, nitrogen and...
